Give ’em enough rope

June 21, 2012

Hard to believe making it easier for employees to hoard email would be a selling point in this day and age, but…

The punchline is that it’ll cost on average something like $87,500 to sift through each of these 25 TB when you get sued.

Is that $87,500 per TB, or $87,500 for 25 TB?

$87,500 for the whole 25 TB. I used $3,500 per TB for legal review as a back of the napkin…

But employees are going to use that amount anyway — if you don’t allow them to keep it in the email system, they’ll just export it to PST files that they keep on their local disk, which may or may not be backed up. Better to find ways to reduce email usage based on capabilities rather than attempt to enforce email usage with restrictive measures that they will just work around anyway.

Agreed on all counts…but I just thought it was funny to see this advertised as a benefit, when so many organizations are kept up at night about the sheer volume of unmanged email they have.
